Dr. Dennis Brooks, DVM, PhD, DAVCO
Dr. Brooks, Professor of Ophthalmology, College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Florida, is a 1980 graduate of the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine. He completed his residency in Comparative Ophthalmology at the University of Florida from 1981-1984 and passed the certifying examination of the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists in 1984. Dr Brooks was an assistant professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine from 1985-1990. His PhD from the University of Florida College of Medicine concerned optic nerve axonal and microvascular studies of Beagle dogs with hereditary glaucoma and was completed in 1987. Dr Brooks returned as an associate professor of Ophthalmology and Ophthalmology Service Chief to the University of Florida in 1990. He has lectured extensively, nationally and internationally, in comparative ophthalmology and glaucoma, and has over 100 refereed publications. Dr Brooks was promoted to Professor of Ophthalmology in 1998, has received numerous teaching and reseach awards, and is a recognized authority on infectious keratitis, corneal transplantation and glaucoma of horses and other animals. Dr Brooks was the President of the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists from 1997-1998. His book, Equine Ophthalmology, was published in 2002.
Dr. Ray Kaplan, DVM, Phd, DEVPC
Dr. Kaplan, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Infectious Diseases, College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Georgia where he teaches and does research in veterinary parasitology. Prior to this position Dr. Kaplan served in the Army Veterinary Corps at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research where he was Chief of Parasite Biology in the Division of Experimental Therapeutics. Dr. Kaplan received his bachelor’s degree from Virginia Tech and his DVM from Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine. He worked as a clinical veterinarian in a mixed-species private practice in Pennsylvania for several years before leaving practice for the University of Florida where he earned a PhD in Veterinary Parasitology. Since 1998 he has been in his current position where he teaches and performs research in veterinary parasitology, and is director of the parasitology diagnostic laboratory. His research program is focused on measuring, understanding, and solving the problem of drug-resistance in helminth parasites.
Dr. Madigan is a Professor in the Department of Medicine and Epidemiology, board certified in equine internal medicine and a Senior Clinician in Equine Medicine and Neonatal Critical Care. He is the School of Veterinary Medicine Disaster Coordinator and heads the UC Davis Veterinary Emergency Response Team and Equine Helicopter Rescue Team. Dr. Madigan received his DVM and Master of Science degree from University of California at Davis. He was in private practice for 8 years before returning to UC Davis in Equine Medicine. He served as the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital Infectious Disease officer for 7 years. Dr. Madigan was in private practice for 8 years and upon return to UC Davis his experience trying to comfort or save down horses lead him to develop the Anderson Sling and the Large Animal Lift. His initial rescue experiences highlighted the need for coordinated disaster planning efforts, the need for animal rescue advocacy, and the subsequent need for animal care.
Dr. Burner graduated from the Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1997. Following her internship at the San Luis Rey Equine Hospital in Southern California, she pacticed in Ohio for several years before moving to Ocala in 2001. Dr. Burner joins Peterson and Smith as a sucessful equine solo practitioner, who has been practicing in Ocala for three years.
Carol C. Clark, D.V.M., Diplomate A.C.V.I.M.
Graduated from Texas A&M University in 1991. Completed internship at Peterson & Smith 1991-1992 and internal medicine residency at the University of Florida 1992-1995. Major clinical interests: neonatology, neurology, cardiology, and ophthalmology. Board certified by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine in 1995. Joined Peterson & Smith in 1996 to run the equine neonatal ICU, and manage the hospital’s internal medicine cases.
Tim M. Lynch, DVM, Diplomate, ACVS
Graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1991. Completed internship at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital, Lexington, Kentucky 1991-1992; surgical residency at Michigan State University 1992-1995. Staff Surgeon at Equine Specialty Hospital, Cleveland, Ohio 1995-2000. Board Certified by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in 1999. Staff Surgeon at Tiegland, Franklin and Brokken, Fort Lauderdale, Florida 2000-2002. Joined Peterson & Smith in 2002 to head the Sports Medicine Program. Clinical interests: lameness, scintigraphy, performance profiling and gastrointestinal surgery.
Dr. Meeks graduated from the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine in May 2004. He completed his ambulatory internship at Peterson & Smith from 2004 to 2005, and in July 2005 became an associate veterinarian with the practice
Dr. Jennifer Munroe graduated from University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine in May 2004. She completed her ambulatory internship at Peterson & Smith from 2004 to 2005, and in July 2005 became an associate veterinarian with the practice.
Graduated from Iowa State University in 1966; In private practice 1966-1981. Founded Peterson & Smith in 1981 with Johnny Mac Smith, D.V.M. Member of AAEP and AVMA since 1966; Member of the AAEP Broodmare Reproduction Committee. Specialties: training and racehorse medicine, lameness, reproduction and pediatrics. Founding Director of Independent National Bank.
Dr. Thacker graduated from Auburn University in May 2004. She completed her ambulatory internship at Peterson and Smith from 2004 to 2005, and in July 2005 became an associate veterinarian with the practice. She works closely with Dr. Matthews on the embryo transfer program at our Equine Reproduction Center.
Dr Trimble was born and raised in Langley British Columbia. She returned to University to pursue veterinary medicine after spending 6 years in the business world. She completed her undergrad at San Francisco State University and returned to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan to attend the Western College of Veterinary Medicine and graduated in May 2005. Dr. Trimble completed her ambulatory internship at Peterson & Smith in June 2006 when she became a veterinary associate.
